Book Reviews: Pat McManus

Patrick F. McManus is an outdoors humorist who publishes short stories in magazines such as Field and Stream, Outdoor Life, and Reader's Digest. He then compiles these into book form and publishes them again. The stories often detail the escapades of his youth out in the great outdoors; others recount his more recent experiences as a sportsman. He injects all of these stories with humor—sometimes wry, sometimes ridiculous.

My verdict: I remember McManus' books being a lot funnier when I was younger, but they were still enjoyable even though I chuckled less often. Several chapters were good enough that I had to tell them to Leann.

My favorite stories from Rubber Legs and White Tail-Hairs were: "Pigs", "The Mountain", "To Filet or Not to Filet" [sic], and "Throwing Stuff". The chapter "Claw of the Sea-puss" was clever but a little bizarre.

My favorite stories from The Night the Bear Ate Goombaw were: "Out of Sync", "Getting it in the Ear", "Scritche's Creek", "Whitewater Fever", and "Boating Disorders".

My favorite stories from Never Sniff a Gift Fish were: "Blowing Smoke", "Salami on Rye and Hold the Wild Gobo", "Two-Man-Tent Fever", "The Mountain Car", "The Bush Pilots", and "Never Sniff a Gift Fish".

  1. I remember reading him. I thoroughly enjoyed the books too. I haven't re-read him though, so I don't know how that would be.
