do witness that there is a Supreme Creator.
The filmmakers of Star Trek Into Darkness played coy with us (and in a few cases outright lied to us). They said the villain (played by Benedict Cumberbatch, of Sherlock [1] fame) would be "Harry Mudd, or Trelane, or Gary Mitchell, or the Talosians or the Horta."[2] Later as trailers, screenings, and interviews began we were given the name for Cumberbatch's character: John Harrison…which wasn't any of the three we were originally told. Then things really started getting fishy. One of the new characters was revealed to be Dr. Carol Marcus. And there was a trailer with some highly evocative scenes reminscent of a previous Star Trek movie.[3] If you haven't already figured it out, I reveal the identity of the villain below. Proceed at your own risk.
My verdict:
I liked that they contrasted Kirk's God complex at the beginning with Kahn's at the end. However, I thought they could've delved into more Nietzschean ideas. There were two fleshy scenes that were rather gratuitous. The camerawork seemed less jittery this time, but the lens flares were still out of control.[4] It's not clear to me why Khan went to hide on Kronos. The mirroring of the scenes from The Wrath of Khan was handled well. Leann and I both guessed, before it was revealed, how they were going to brink Kirk back. I wanted the fight between Spock and Kahn to be more intense. And let's face it, after someone plows a giant space ship into San Francisco, certainly killing hundreds of thousands of people, you don't put them back into suspended animation. You destroy them. For days after watching the film, I still had the score stuck in my head, but that wasn't unpleasant.
